Kandhamal District Opens Emergency Night Shelters as Temperatures Drop | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: G Udayagiri shivered at 6.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday with several other places in Kandhamal district recording temperatures between 7°C and 11°C, prompting authorities to take emergency measures for homeless people.
District collector Amrit Ruturaj has directed block development officers (BDOs) and urban local bodies (ULBs) to open temporary night shelters across the district. “We have instructed officials to operationalise existing shelters and establish new ones where needed,” he said.
The administration has also modified school timings, shifting to day classes on Saturdays until Feb end due to the cold.
Several night shelters have been established near bus stands to accommodate long-distance passengers. While Phulbani and Baliguda have permanent facilities, G Udayagiri NAC has converted its kalyan mandap into a temporary shelter. These facilities can accommodate between 10 and 50 people, though officials report low occupancy rates.
“We are planning to extend these facilities to panchayat levels,” said Priti Ranjan Rath of Daringbadi block.
G Udayagiri’s temperature was 6.6 degrees below normal. Phulbani recorded 9.5°C and Daringbadi 10.5°C. Interior regions, including Bramhanigaon, Kotagarh, Belaghara, Raikia and Phiringia recorded temperatures between 7°C and 11°C.
Dense fog also blanketed several places in the district, severely affecting visibility and disrupting vehicular movement. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation as the cold condition persists.
