Join the Plogathon: Jog and Clean Up Bhubaneswar for a Garbage-Free City | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: In a bid to clear garbage from 140 vulnerable points in the city, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday launched a 10-day plogathon.
Every day, three locations will be covered under the plogathon (a long-distance race which combines jogging with picking up litter). “At least 10 tonnes of garbage will be collected daily during the special cleaning drive.Bulk of the waste will also include plastic items, which will be separated at the material recovery facilities (MRF)s,” said Manoranjan Sahu, BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation).
On the first day, around 1,200 participants collected 32 metric tonnes of waste, a little over three times the daily target. The participants included members of resident welfare associations (RWAs), NGOs, swachh karmis and local volunteers.
The 16 locations, where garbage vulnerable points have been identified are AIIMS road, Nandankanan road, Cuttack-Puri bypass road, Studio Square to Chandaka, Utkal University, BMC hospital and Lingaraj Temple area, Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills, GGP colony, Ramadevi Women’s University, Capital Hospital, Hanspal-Pahala-Nakhara stretch, BJB College, SoA University, IDCO industrial area, Kargil Road and Sundarpada. BMC officials said the points have been identified to guide sweepers and other sanitation workers.
“Cleaning is being prioritised on a mission mode. The city needs to be presentable on the sanitation front. Specific stretches have been identified on priority for makeover activities before Oct 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The plogathon is participatory,” Sahu added.
