Job Seekers: Expelled BJD leader arrested for cheating job seekers | Bhubaneswar News

Koraput: Police on Friday arrested Sasmita Majhi, an expelled BJD leader and zilla parishad member of Mathili zone 3 in Malkangiri district, for her involvement in a job racket that duped several aspirants out of lakhs in Malkangiri. She was absconding for the past few days and was nabbed from Jagatsinghpur. “Majhi is being brought to Malkangiri for interrogation. We have electronic evidence against her that suggests her involvement in the crime,” Malkangiri SP Nitesh Wadhwani said.
Earlier on Monday, police arrested the alleged mastermind behind the crime, Ramesh Chandra Rout, from Khurda. Rout had been impersonating as the brother-in-law of former bureaucrat and BJD leader V K Pandian. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged at Mathili police station in Malkangiri district. According to the SP, the arrested duo was part of a well-organized racket that included another associate, Jeeban Sahu. The group allegedly lured unemployed youths with false promises of government jobs, duping them of several lakhs of rupees. Sahu is absconding at the moment.
During interrogation, police discovered that Rout had no connections with any bureaucrat and was a habitual offender who deceived people by falsely claiming ties to high-profile leaders and bureaucrats. “Sasmita worked as Rout’s local agent, attracting unemployed youths into the scam. Rout exploited the name of a senior state administrative officer with a similar name to lend credibility to his claims, making it easier to deceive his victims,” Wadhwani added.
