JD(U)’s Bhagwan Kushwaha files papers for council seat | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Former minister and JD(U) functionary Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha filed his nomination papers on Tuesday for the legislative council seat that had fallen vacant after the disqualification of RJD MLC Rambali Singh Chandravanshi in February this year due to anti-party activities.
Tuesday marked the final day for nominations, with July 5 set as the deadline for withdrawals, and the election scheduled for July 12.If uncontested, Kushwaha will secure the seat unopposed. He submitted his papers to assembly secretary Raj Kumar in the presence of senior NDA netas.
Accompanying Kushwaha were CM Nitish Kumar, JD(U) ministers Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Shrawan Kumar, deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, health Minister Mangal Pandey, and HAM(S) minister Santosh Kumar Suman, among others. Upendra Kushwaha, former Union minister and RLM chief, also attended.
Interestingly, RJD opted not to nominate a candidate, aligning with the legislative convention to facilitate unopposed elections to council or Rajya Sabha seats.
Currently, five seats are vacant in the 243-member state assembly, reducing the effective strength to 238, where the ruling NDA holds a majority. Therefore, Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha is widely expected to be elected unopposed.
A week ago, Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha’s unilateral council seat candidacy caused upset for Upendra Kushwaha. Before the Lok Sabha elections, it was agreed with BJP that Upendra’s party would receive the Karakat Lok Sabha seat and a council nomination.
