Puri: Jagannath Temple and its surroundings were illuminated by as many as 1 lakh diyas on the grand occasion of Deba Dipavali. The glow of the diya decorations extended from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, enchanting visitors and devotees alike.
Residents across Puri participated in the celebration by lighting diyas in their homes. The temple premises were adorned with elaborate decorations, and the festivities were marked by cultural events. At Bagha Akhada Matha, the ‘biswa shanti jadurveda maha yajna‘ was performed, featuring the chanting of 1,000 mantras by priests from the state and beyond. The yajna, along with other celebrations, was coordinated by the Odisha International Centre, Srimandira Chhatisa Nijoga, and various social organisations.
According to the sacred text Niladri Mahodaya, Deba Dipavali is a three-day festival celebrated annually from Margasira Krishna Chaturdashi to Sukla Pratipada. During this time, the deities of the Jagannath Temple appear in their sacred shraddha besa following the sandhya dhupa ritual.
Once the Besha ritual is complete, servitors offer diyas to the deities seated on the Ratna Singhasan. This is followed by the illumination of the entire temple complex and the Grand Road, creating a divine and tranquil atmosphere.
Moumita Roy, a visitor from West Bengal, expressed her awe, saying, “We witnessed Diwali in Ayodhya this year, but we were unaware that similar events are organised at the Puri Jagannath Temple. We were astonished by the dazzling view of the temple and the Grand Road.”
