Bhubaneswar: Internet service was suspended for 24 hours in Bhadrak town, Tihidi and Dhamnagar blocks of Bhadrak district from 6am on Thursday, a day after a man, who sustained injuries in a clash between two communities on May 30, succumbed to his wounds. The deceased, Santosh Parida, a 32-year-old resident of Tihidi, had been undergoing treatment since becoming critically injured in a violent altercation between the communities last week. He died on Wednesday, prompting authorities to impose internet clampdown as a precautionary measure to prevent flare-ups.Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a compensation package for Parida’s family, which includes Rs 10 lakh ex gratia and employment assistance to one family member. “We stand with the bereaved family and are taking all necessary steps to ensure peace prevails,” the CM said in a statement. A CMO statement said the govt will also cover the educational expenses of Parida’s three-year-old son.Twelve people have been arrested so far in connection with the May 30 incident when members of two communities clashed over cattle transportation. Bhadrak SP Manoj Rout said efforts are on to nab the others. “The situation is completely under control. The suspension of internet is a preventive step to avoid misinformation and further tension,” Rout said.DIG (eastern range) Satyajit Naik said to maintain law and order, 27 platoons of police have been deployed across vulnerable areas. Local leaders are also facilitating inter-community dialogue in a bid to restore harmony. He said two others injured in the incident have already been discharged from hospital.Naik said three police teams are on the hunt to identify and nab more suspects involved in the clash. “There could be around eight more other than the 12 arrested. Police teams had raided hideouts in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, besides other parts in Odisha,” Naik said.A govt spokesperson said the situation is being closely monitored and urged the public to exercise restraint. “We appeal to all to cooperate with authorities and help maintain peace,” the official said.
