Hyderabad: An interior designer allegedly attempted to bludgeon his pregnant wife to death with a cement brick near a private hospital in Kondapur on April 1. The victim is currently battling for life at Gandhi Hospital, and the accused has been arrested by the Gachibowli police. The incident came to light recently after the CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media.
The victim, Shabana Parveen, 22, is a native of West Bengal. About a year ago, Shabana fell in love with Md Basharat, 32, an interior designer from New Hafeezpet, while he was working in Kolkata. They married six months ago and moved to Hyderabad. According to police, Basharat launched the murderous attack due to marital discord.
At 10:30 pm on April 1, Basharat had an argument with his wife near Sia Life Hospital in Raghavendra Colony, Kondapur. During the argument, he slapped his wife and pushed her to the ground. He picked up a cement brick lying next to the victim and repeatedly attacked her on the head. The CCTV footage of the incident shows Basharat picking up and dropping the brick four times on the head of the victim.
“I saw the accused repeatedly attacking a woman with a cement brick and tried to intervene. He threatened to hurl the brick at me, and I backed off. I went to a nearby pan shop owner and informed him about the assault. I tried calling police, but the call did not go through,” Ch Prajwal Reddy, an eyewitness and a resident of Raghavendra Colony, said.
After the assault, the victim fell unconscious at the spot, while the accused fled from the scene. Alerted by the locals, the Gachibowli police rushed to the spot and shifted the victim to Gandhi Hospital for treatment. “She suffered severe head injuries and is currently in the ICU at Gandhi Hospital. She has been unconscious since the assault. Her condition is critical,” Gachibowli sub-inspector (SI) V Raja Sekhar Reddy said.
On Prajwal’s complaint, the Gachibowli police registered a case against Basharat under Section 109 (1) (attempt to murder) of the BNS on April 2. “We arrested the accused from Hafeezpet on April 2 night. He was produced before the court on April 3 and remanded in judicial custody,” the SI said.
During questioning, Basharat confessed to police that he had met Shabana in Kolkata while he was working there about a year ago. On March 31, Shabana was admitted to Sia Life Hospital in Raghavendra Colony due to a gynaecological problem. “After the treatment, she was discharged on April 1 night. Basharat said that their marital relationship had strained recently, and he had an argument with Shabana as she refused to come with him to their house. In a fit of rage, he assaulted her near the hospital and caused grievous injuries,” the SI said.
