Mumbai: A day after the Union govt assured Supreme Court that it would not act upon the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 till May 5, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Friday said it did not see the assurance as a “big relief”.
Speaking to media persons in the city as part of its ongoing nationwide protests, which will continue till July 7, senior board members said they have rejected the entire Act as it is “discriminatory”, “unconstitutional” and aims at “usurping the waqf properties.”
“We expected Supreme Court would give us a big relief as it had intended to stay certain contentious provisions like ending of waqf by user, inclusion of non-Muslims on the Central Waqf Council and the different state waqf boards and enhancing powers of the district collectors while sorting out disputes. While we’ll wait till the next hearing on May 5, our protests against this law will continue until govt scraps it,” said the board’s spokesperson Q R Ilyas.
When asked whether the All India Muslim Personal Law Board was dismayed at the delegation of Dawood Bohras meeting PM Modi on Thursday and congratulating him on passing the Amendment Act, Ilyas claimed the “Bohras are with us on this issue”. “At a working committee meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board in Delhi, a delegation of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin had told us that the Bohras are with us. Their meeting with Modi was to thank him for accepting their demand to create a separate waqf board for the Bohras.”
All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s vice-president and head of Jamate Islami Hind Syed Saadatullah Hussaini alleged that the law was brought in only to harass Muslims. “Hindu temple trusts and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee cannot have members from other communities, but waqf boards and council, which manage Muslim endowments, will have non-Muslims. This violates Article 26,” Hussaini pointed out.
