Inquiry Launched into Tragic Food Poisoning Deaths of Tribal Women in Kandhamal | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Revenue divisional commissioner (southern division) Roopa Roshan Sahoo on Wednesday began an inquiry into the deaths of two tribal women after allegedly consuming mango kernel gruel in Kandhamal district last week.
The probe was ordered by chief minister Mohan Majhi on Tuesday, after Runi Majhi (25) and Ramita Majhi (32) died on Friday, while six others fell ill after eating the mango kernel gruel. Health officials have attributed the deaths to food poisoning.
During her visit to Mandipanka village under Daringibadi block’s Gadapur panchayat, Sahoo interacted with the victims’ families and villagers to understand the preparation method and circumstances leading to the consumption of gruel. She also examined the rice distribution system at ration centres in Brahmanigaon.
“I have spoken with the victims and villagers about the preparation of mango kernel gruel,” Sahoo told reporters. She is scheduled to meet district-level officers at Phulbani on Nov 11 and submit her findings to the govt within the stipulated one-week deadline.
Kandhamal collector Amrit Ruturaj accompanied the RDC during her visit.
Two of the hospitalised women — Tuni Majhi (44) and Geeta Majhi (35) — are critical at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, suffering from multi-organ failure and other complications. The remaining four patients are receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and are stable.
