Industries asked to provide rest sheds, water facilities for workers | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: Cuttack administration has mandated all industries to provide rest sheds and drinking water facilities for workers without delay as part of its heatwave mitigation strategy. The directive, aimed at protecting thousands of industrial workers from extreme summer temperatures, will impact over 500 registered industries across the district, particularly in the industrial hubs of Athagarh, Ramdaspur, and Jagatpur.
“Providing rest sheds and ensuring drinking water availability for industrial workers is not just a necessity but a fundamental responsibility of the industries,” said collector (Cuttack) Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde. He warned of strict action against units violating these norms.
The district labour office (DLO) has been instructed to conduct regular inspections to verify compliance and report any lapses. Industries must create sheds where workers can take breaks to cool down and stay hydrated. “Industries play a vital role in the district’s economy, and it is equally important to ensure that workers are protected from extreme weather conditions,” Shinde added.
The move comes as a relief for workers, many of whom travel from different parts of the state and outside, who face the risk of heat-related illnesses due to prolonged exposure to harsh weather conditions. Industry owners have welcomed the initiative. “This is a timely step by the administration. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our workers is essential for smooth operations,” said Satwik Swain, an industry owner. He added that his unit has already begun setting up rest sheds and water facilities.
