Patna: Independent candidate Shankar Singh secured victory in the Rupauli assembly seat, defeating JD(U) nominee Kaladhar Mandal by a margin of 8,246 votes and pushing RJD nominee and sitting MLA Bima Bharti to third place. The byelection, held on July 10, concluded with Singh receiving 68,070 votes, Mandal garnering 59,824 votes and Bharti obtaining 30,619 votes.
The need for the byelection arose after Bharti, the incumbent JD(U) MLA, switched to the RJD to contest the Purnia Lok Sabha seat, where she suffered a defeat to independent candidate Pappu Yadav.The RJD re-nominated Bharti , but she faced an uphill battle against Singh and Mandal.
