In rare act, parents donate 16-month-old’s kidneys, liver | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Parents of Janmesh Lenka, a 16-month-old baby who died on March 1 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, donated his organs which will help save two young lives. While the boy’s kidneys were transplanted to an adolescent boy at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, his liver was sent to Delhi where it was transplanted to a child suffering from end-stage liver failure.
“Doctors tried their best, but unfortunately, they could not save my son. When doctors approached us, saying that the child was brain dead but his organs could save the lives of others, we agreed with the hope that his organs will give new life to others. Our loss can never be filled, but hopefully other parents will not have to undergo the same pain we are experiencing,” said Janmesh’s father Ashok Lenka, a hostel warden at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Janmesh was admitted to the paediatric department of AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Feb 12 after food got stuck in his windpipe. Despite receiving immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the child died on March 1. His cremation was conducted on Monday with state honours as per govt’s provisions for organ donors.
Janmesh’s mother Pratibha was visibly shattered. “Our child was a pure soul. Very few get such an opportunity to give lives to others.”
Dr Krishna Mohan Gulla, head of paediatric ICU at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, lauded the parents decision to donate the organs. “Amid their unbearable grief, Janmesh’s parents took this brave decision to donate his organs, giving hope to those in need. Their decision will inspire many others to consider organ donation, which can give a second chance to those suffering from organ failure,” Gulla said.
Following the consent of the family, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and transplant coordinators swiftly facilitated the retrieval and transplantation process on Sunday. The liver was successfully retrieved by the gastro-surgery team led by Dr Brahmadutt Patnaik and was transported to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi. A green corridor was created from AIIMS to Bhubaneswar airport to transport the liver.
