IMD issues heavy rain warning for Mumbai and Thane, high tide expected: ‘Stay indoors,’ urges BMC | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain in Mumbai and Thane starting Tuesday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) forecasts heavy to very heavy rains in isolated parts of the city and suburbs, with occasional winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km per hour. High tides of 4.72 meters at 2:11 p.m. and another high tide of 4.20 meters at 2:18 a.m.on Wednesday are also predicted.
The average rainfall recorded from July 23 to July 24 was 26.28 mm. Central Railway locals in Mumbai experienced a 15-minute delay due to a technical issue between the Matunga and Sion stations. A local train in the up direction was stranded for nearly 35 minutes from 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. due to problems with the overhead wires. Some trains were diverted to the slow line, causing the delays.
“Mumbai Police issued an advisory asking citizens to avoid coastal areas due to the heavy rainfall in the city. Residents should leave their homes only if necessary and take precautions. In case of any emergency, number 100 has also been issued,” the police stated.
The Mumbai civic authority also urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary after the IMD issued an orange alert predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
“The IMD has issued an orange alert (heavy to very heavy) for Mumbai today. People are requested to avoid going out unless necessary,” said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in a statement.
The orange alert also extends to Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. Heavy rains have led to waterlogging on several roads and caused traffic snarls in Mumbai.
Mumbai has been experiencing heavy rain for the past couple of weeks. The Central Railway’s technical problem caused significant delays, with the local train in the up direction being stranded, leading to a cascading effect on other trains that were subsequently diverted to the slow line.
High tides are expected to exacerbate the situation, with tides measuring 4.72 meters and 4.20 meters expected on Tuesday evening and Wednesday early morning, respectively.
The IMD’s forecast emphasizes the continued potential for heavy to very heavy rain, urging the public to take necessary precautions.
