IMD issues extremely heavy rain warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar dists | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The northern districts of Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar are likely to get extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours as the IMD issued a red warning. On Wednesday, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal triggered heavy rain in several districts, causing a landslide in Kalinga Ghati of Kandhamal and waterlogging in low-lying areas of some districts, official sources said.“Two places in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts recorded extremely heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. These two districts are likely to get another spell of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours,” Manorama Mohanty, director of the IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre said on Wednesday. According to the IMD, Joda in Keonjhar district recorded 130 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, followed by 120 mm at Tiring in Mayurbhanj district. Six places in the state received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, IMD sources said. In the past 24 hours, Odisha received a district average rainfall of 13.5 mm.Rainfall is likely in districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur till June 20. “The low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal is likely to bring good amount of rainfall in the state over the next 2-3 days,” Mohanty added.No damage to life and property was reported in the landslide incident that took place in Kalinga Ghati in Kandhamal, official sources said. Low-lying areas of Barbil town in Keonjhar district and Deogarh town were flooded following heavy rain in the last 24 hours.The IMD cautioned about localised flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas due to heavy rain in urban areas, which could disrupt traffic. Landslides and mudslides are likely in vulnerable areas, the IMD bulletin warned.The special relief commissioner has alerted district authorities where a rainfall warning has been issued to take precautionary measures to avoid potential damage and ensure public safety, official sources said.
