IMD: IMD issues red warning for heavy rain in southern Odisha districts | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorology Department (IMD) issued a red warning of extremely heavy rain in three southern districts of Malkangiri, Koraput and Gajapati on Saturday. In view of this, Koraput administration announced that schools and anganwadi centres will remain closed in the district on Friday.
Other parts of the state are likely to experience widespread heavy rain till Sept 2, IMD forecast said.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area was formed over the sea on Thursday. It is likely to intensify into a depression by Saturday triggering heavy rain in southern Odisha, the IMD forecast said.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over east central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, a low pressure area formed over central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal on Thursday. It is likely to move west-north-westwards and become more marked over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Friday. “Thereafter, while moving towards north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts, it is likely to intensify into a depression over west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal during subsequent two days,” IMD’s special bulletin said.
The IMD has issued orange warning for heavy rain between 7 and 11 cm in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts on Friday while yellow warning for heavy rain is expected in 10 districts and thunderstorm and lightning is likely in 20 districts.
The intensity of rain is likely to increase on Saturday and extremely heavy rain is expected to pound southern Odisha districts as an orange warning for heavy rain has been issued for Rayagada, Ganjam, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi. The IMD has also issued yellow warning for heavy rain for 11 other districts for Saturday.
Special relief commissioner has alerted district authorities under red and yellow warning to keep administrative machinery ready in case of face any eventuality. Sources said IMD’s colour code for weather warnings of red, orange and yellow alert stands for take action, be prepared and updated.
