1 dead in cave-in at illegal stone quarry

Kendrapada: A worker was killed after an illegal black stone quarry caved in at Rahadapur hillock in Jajpur district on Saturday.
“The incident occurred when a portion of the hillock collapsed while workers were engaged in illegal black stone quarrying. Police recovered the body and sent it to Dharamsala govt hospital for autopsy,” said Suvendu Kumar Sahoo, IIC of Jenapur police station.
Locals demanded action against those responsible for employing workers in illegal mining.Narasingh Nayak, a local resident, said the rising demand for black stone in construction has intensified mining activities in Jajpur and surrounding areas.
“Poor tribal people are lured by labour contractors to work in quarries in Sukinda, Dharamsala, Barachana, Rasulpur and Korei blocks. Four to seven workers die in quarry accidents in the district each year,” Nayak alleged.
