IIT-M asked to work on plan for behavioural change of motorists to curb accidents | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: With the govt planning to launch a ‘zero accident day’ (ZAD) campaign this month, the transport department on Friday asked IIT Madras, technical consultant of the Odisha govt on road safety matters, to develop a comprehensive behavioural change programme for motorists. The initiative aims to transform the driving culture and promote road safety. The govt signed an MoU with IIT Madras in this regard a few months ago.
“Our approach combines psychological insights with practical solutions. We are not just creating rules; we need to understand why people make unsafe choices on roads and how to effectively change these patterns. We have urged IIT Madras to draw up a plan of action so that it will trigger motorists to take care of their safety while driving,” a senior transport official said.
In the preparatory ZAD meeting chaired by transport secretary Usha Padhee on Friday, IIT Madras was asked to conduct comprehensive research on driving patterns and road user behaviour across various districts. Padhee emphasised public participation and coordinated action for the successful implementation of the proposed campaign.
IIT Madras has been advised to analyse common traffic violations, accident-prone areas and factors contributing to road accidents. The institute will develop targeted interventions and awareness campaigns to promote safe driving habits.
Road accident deaths in Odisha increased by 7% in 2024 compared to 2023, according to Odisha police sources. The data showed fatalities rose to 6,142 in 2024 from 5,739 in 2023.
