IGIMS doctors perform rare heart surgery

Patna: Doctors at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, achieved a medical milestone on Wednesday by performing a groundbreaking heart surgery on an octogenarian using advanced techniques for cardiac ailments. The procedure, known as Awake CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting), marks a significant first not only in Bihar but across the entire eastern region, IGIMS doctors claimed.
“This is a great achievement for us as we have not only adopted the rare method of heart surgery but have successfully completed the operation, and the patient is doing fine,” said Dr Sheil Avneesh, head of the operating team.
Describing the complexity of the surgery, Dr Avneesh highlighted the challenges posed by the patient’s advanced age and multiple health conditions. “We will monitor him closely for the next four to five days and plan to discharge him by Monday or Tuesday,” he added. The surgery, which typically costs between Rs 4.5 to 5 lakh in private hospitals and around Rs 2.5 lakh elsewhere, was performed free of cost under Ayushman Bharat for the patient.
“This is a rare operation, performed in only one in a million cases of heart surgery, specifically applicable to CABG procedures,” said the doctors. They added the Awake CABG technique ensures rapid recovery and reduced ICU and hospital stays, though it requires meticulous attention due to the patient being under cardiac anesthesia rather than general anesthesia.
The six-hour surgery involved a team of seven doctors, including four surgeons (Dr Sheil Avneesh, Dr Tushar Kumar, Dr Abhinav and Dr Samar) and three anesthesia specialists (Dr P K Dubey, Dr Alok Bharti and Dr Alok Kumar). During the critical procedure, the patient remained fully awake and listened to ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ through headphones.
The 80-year-old patient, a farmer from Kusheshwar, had been turned away from several hospitals in Darbhanga due to his age and multiple health issues, including coronary heart disease, arthritis, asthma and diabetes.
