NEW DELHI: The University of Hyderabad Students’ Union (UoHSU) has called for an indefinite protest and class boycott starting Tuesday, demanding the withdrawal of police forces and construction equipment from campus. UoHSU Vice President Akash has called upon students and faculty to participate in the campus protest and suspend academic activities.
The UoHSU and affiliated student organisations issued a collective statement accusing university officials of deceiving students by enabling government land clearance activities on 400 acres at Kancha Gachibowli adjacent to the university. They expressed strong opposition to the forceful police response against peaceful protesters.
Students are seeking written confirmation of the land’s registration under university ownership. They also demand public disclosure of Executive Committee meeting minutes and enhanced transparency regarding land-related documentation.
A BJP legislative delegation, headed by floor leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, plans to visit the location on Tuesday. Substantial police presence has been positioned near the MLAs quarters.
Maheshwar Reddy informed PTI that police restricted him to his residence without providing any formal notification explaining the restrictions. Similarly, other BJP legislators and officials faced police restrictions at their homes.
The Telangana government’s initiative to establish IT infrastructure on the disputed 400 acres sparked intensified student protests on Monday. The government maintains its ownership of the property, disputing university claims.
The UoH Registrar issued a statement confirming the finalisation of the contested land’s boundary, contradicting governmental assertions.
The government released a detailed statement suggesting that property developers and political figures were misleading students. Environmental activists and student groups oppose the development plans, citing ecological preservation concerns.
Following Sunday’s protest against police and machinery deployment, authorities detained over 50 students, who were subsequently released.
Police reported that when TGIIC began development work on March 30, university members and others attempted to forcibly halt operations, allegedly assaulting officials and workers. Two individuals were arrested in connection with this incident.
TGIIC confirmed its legal ownership of the property on Monday, stating that UoH holds no claim to the disputed land. They warned that challenging ownership rights would constitute contempt of court.
The state administration under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy emphasises sustainable local development and environmental protection. They clarified that revenue records indicate the land is not classified as forest area. The government claims a land survey was conducted in July 2024 with the UoH Registrar’s approval, finalising boundaries with university officials present.
However, UoH contradicted this, stating no such survey occurred in July 2024. Registrar Devesh Nigam confirmed only a preliminary land assessment had taken place.
The university rejected claims of agreeing to land demarcation. Government sources countered by referencing documents showing the Kancha Gachibowli land transfer to state authorities in 2004.
