Chennai: A pair of graduates from Villupuram ran a year-long operation stealing premium bikes from residential areas across Chennai without ever breaking a lock or forcing entry. Their method was to pose as food delivery agents, blend into neighbourhoods, and quietly note down the location and model of high-end motorcycles parked outside homes.Once a list was ready, one of them would return days later to steal the vehicles, mostly late at night. The duo, both in their early 20s, focused on areas with minimal CCTV coverage and no security guards. They picked bikes that could fetch more than 3 lakh in resale value, police said.They never kept the stolen vehicles in one place. They parked them in public areas, often near parks in interior localities and finalized sales there. Most buyers were college students, some of whom were unaware that the vehicles were stolen.Investigators found that one of the accused, Arjun, 22, from Villupuram, used his technical education to evade digital tracking. He used his experience in dismantling GPS modules from bikes. He also used encrypted chat platforms to communicate and fix deals. Police believe this helped them avoid detection for nearly a year, even as complaints mounted in police stations across Anna Nagar, Arumbakkam, Koyambedu, Villivakkam, and Aminjikarai.The other accused, Kabilan, 24, from Anna Nagar, handled the sale of the vehicles and ensured they were never routed through second-hand dealers. Instead, he sold the bikes directly to students, offering steep discounts and assuring them of original documents, which were forged. Some buyers were allowed test rides near the parks. The Anna Nagar crime wing arrested both earlier this week and recovered five premium bikes during raids.Preliminary inquiries suggest the duo stole and sold more than a dozen bikes over the past year. Police are now verifying buyer identities and probing whether the stolen vehicles were used in other criminal activities. Both suspects have been remanded in judicial custody.
