Patna: With the onset of the monsoon, numerous health issues arise. The hot and humid weather not only makes life uncomfortable but also impacts health. Viral, bacterial and fungal infections have seen a jump this monsoon too.
According to city-based doctors, there has been an increase in cases of typhoid, jaundice, viral fever, influenza and gastroenteritis, leading to vomiting and loose motions.

“These health complications are directly or indirectly linked to the monsoon,” said Dr Diwakar Tejaswi, a city-based physician. He added that there has been at least a 15% increase in such cases. “Although dengue cases have started appearing, they are mainly from people coming from outside the area and local spread has not occurred yet,” he said.
Dr Tejaswi added that cases of hepatitis A and E, mainly due to contaminated food and water, are being reported. Dr Ravi Shankar Singh, medical director at Jaya Prabha Medanta, said, “People are coming with jaundice, viral fever and gastroenteritis in both the medicine and paediatric OPDs. Two jaundice cases were reported from the same family, but no dengue cases have been seen so far.”
Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, officiating director at Mahavir Arogya Sansthan, confirmed the rise in water-borne diseases during this weather. “We are getting cases of gastroenteritis, jaundice and typhoid. The humid weather is also leading to fungal infections. Cases of viral fever and flu have also increased,” he said.
Doctors have advised people to avoid outside food, stay hydrated, consume hot and fresh food and drink clean water. Those suffering from vomiting or loose motions should be particularly cautious about the loss of water and salt from their bodies. Infected individuals should isolate themselves to prevent spreading the infection, they said.
