Chennai: In a bid to attract global capability centres (GCC) of multinational companies, the govt announced a “world-class knowledge corridor” and Tidel park in Hosur. But stakeholders say the state govt must first focus on building civic infrastructure.
The finance minister said the ‘Hosur Knowledge Corridor‘ would be akin to the information technology corridor in OMR and the Rs 400 crore Tidel Park will have office facilities spread over 5 lakh sqft.
“It is a strategic move by the govt,” said Rajaram Venkataraman, convenor and head of FICCI’s state technology panel. “The region is an auto and electronics hub and the city has opportunities in the GCC space. But the govt should create incentives such as setting up special economic zones.”
K Ramasubramanian, deputy manager of auto component maker Suprajit Engineering, said thousands commute daily from Hosur to Bengaluru. “The traffic congestion on highways has worsened, taking up to two hours sometimes,” said the Hosur resident. “Hosur offers a wide range of talent and skill levels in the technology and automotive sectors, making it a good place for companies to set up shop. However, basic infrastructure such as housing, mobility, sanitation and water should be developed first.”
