Heroic Rescue: Forest Team Saves Elephant Calf from Well in Deogarh District | Bhubaneswar News
Sambalpur: Forest officials rescued an elephant calf that had fallen into a well in Haldiakhol village in Deogarh district on Tuesday.
A herd of 14 elephants was moving near Kundeigola under Reamal range of Deogarh forest division when the calf got separated on Monday night and fell into the well near a banana plantation.
A team led by assistant conservator of forests Swadhinata Sahani, and including range officer Niranjan Dhurua and several forest guards, breached a portion of the well’s wall and created a ramp through a trench using an excavator to facilitate the calf’s rescue.
“Due to fog, we couldn’t start the operation early. However, once we began on Tuesday morning, it took about one and a half hours to rescue the baby elephant,” said Sahani. The calf was safely reunited with its mother, who had stayed nearby throughout the ordeal. The rescued calf and the herd were later guided back to the forest safely. Principal chief conservator of forests, Susanta Nanda, praised the team’s coordinated efforts in a post on X.
