HC to police: Ensure vigilance in trouble-hit Nawada locality | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: The Patna high court has directed the state police to maintain constant vigilance in a locality in Nawada district following the burning of 34 houses by miscreants earlier this year. The court’s directive came after appreciating the state govt’s efforts to rehabilitate the affected families. The division bench, comprising Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Partha Sarathi, issued the order while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) on Dec 11. The full order was made available on Thursday.
The PIL had been initiated suo motu by the high court administration, following a letter from an advocate highlighting concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation. On the night of September 18, miscreants set fire to homes in the Krishna Nagar Deduar locality of Nawada town, rendering 80 people homeless. In response to this incident, the court sought an affidavit from advocate general P K Shahi regarding the follow-up actions taken by the state govt.
The affidavit submitted by the state govt informed the court that an FIR had been lodged at the Nawada Mufassil police station and a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to investigate the incident. The SIT arrested 15 people shortly after the attack and they were produced before the local court for judicial custody.
The court was also informed that the district administration had set up a relief camp at the site of the arson. The camp provided affected families with rations, three meals a day and other essential amenities. Each affected family was promised a compensation of Rs 3 lakh with the first installment of Rs 1 lakh already paid. Also, Rs 30,000 was given to the families to compensate for their destroyed belongings.
Medical relief camps were set up by the civil surgeon of Nawada and various welfare measures were extended to the victims, including the distribution of ration cards, MGNREGA job cards and housing allotments. District education officers also facilitated the admission of children from the affected families into schools.
The court expressed its satisfaction with the rehabilitation efforts made by the state govt while also stressing the need for sustained police vigilance in the affected area to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
