Chennai: Madras high court on Tuesday set aside an order discharging former Union Minister M K Alagiri from a land grab case. Justice P Velmurugan directed Alagiri to face trial in connection with the case registered in 2014.
The case was registered by the anti-land grab cell of the Madurai police, which accused him of illegally acquiring 44 cents of land belonging to the Vinayakar Temple at Sivarakottai, Madurai, for his Daya Engineering College. The police charged him under various sections of the IPC, including those related to cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
A Madurai trial court, in 2021, discharged him from the charges of forging documents to grab the land, prompting the anti-land grab cell to file a review petition in the Madras HC, seeking to reverse the trial court’s order. Alagiri moved a plea seeking to discharge him from all the charges.
Dismissing Alagiri’s plea, Justice Velmurugan held that there is a prima facie case in the prosecution’s case and allowed their petition, reinstating the charges related to forgery.
