HC restrains police from arresting MLA Kaushik Reddy in extortion case

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday directed the Subedari police of Warangal not to arrest Huzurabad MLA and BRS leader Padi Kaushik Reddy in a criminal case registered against him on April 21, 2025. The police registered a case against the MLA for allegedly threatening and demanding 50 lakh from a granite businessman.
While hearing a petition filed by the MLA to quash the case, Justice K Lakshman questioned the necessity of the police registering an FIR upon receiving a complaint at 9 pm, without conducting a preliminary inquiry into the complaint.
The judge also questioned the action of the police in showing haste in arresting the MLA when the investigation is still ongoing and the investigating officer has not yet obtained the call data records of the businessman and the MLA. The court directed the police not to arrest Kaushik Reddy until April 28, 2025.
