HC disposes of contempt petition over Mallathahalli Lake usage

Bengaluru: The high court disposed of a civil contempt petition regarding Mallathahalli Lake, following an affidavit submitted by Tushar Giri Nath, chief commissioner of BBMP.
In his additional compliance affidavit dated March 6, the chief commissioner stated that although an amphitheatre was constructed, the area would be used only as a kalyani and not as amphitheatre. Considering this, a division bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice MI Arun disposed of the contempt petition filed by Geetha Misra, who earlier filed a PIL on the same issue.
In the order passed in the said PIL on March 14, 2023, the high court specified that the authorities should not permit any individual, group, or political party to use the tank area of Mallathahalli Lake in Bengaluru South taluk. “There should not be any temporary or permanent construction, commercial, recreational, or industrial activity in the said lake, and there should not be any pollution or conduct of any act detrimental directly or indirectly to the tank or tank-bed area,” the court specified in its earlier order.
Alleging violation of the said directions and usage of a portion of the lake area for an amphitheatre, Geetha Misra filed this contempt petition in 2024.
