HC calls for probe status on city univ student death case | Bhubaneswar News



Cuttack: Orissa high court on Tuesday sought a status report from the state govt on the progress of the high-level committee’s probe into the death of a Nepalese student at KIIT deemed to be university. The third-year BTech student had reportedly died by suicide in her hostel room on Feb 16.The high court was hearing a PIL filedby Kendrapada-based social worker Pratap Chandra Mohanty seeking judicial inquiry into the alleged suicide ‘for a fair and transparent investigation of the case’. Advocate Anup Kumar Mohapatra, who made submissions on the petitioner’s behalf, claimed that practically no action has been taken by the committee even though two months have passed since the incident.Taking note of it, the two-judge bench of Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M S Raman stated, “Let the state govt first disclose what they have done.” Accordingly, the bench asked the state counsel to take instructions and scheduled the PIL for hearing after the summer vacation, scheduled from May 17 to June 17.The department of higher education had constituted the high-level committee on Feb 18 with the additional secretary of home department as its chairman and two other members — principal secretary of women and child development department and commissioner-cum-secretary of higher education department. The committee was asked to ascertain the circumstances leading to the alleged suicide.
