Handloom Products: PM Modi highlights Sambalpuri Sari in Mann ki Baat | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: During his visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had showcased a Sambalpuri scarf at an event hosted by the Indian diaspora. On Sunday, in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme, the prime minister once again spoke about Sambalpuri sari as he threw light on various handloom products from across the country that are becoming popular.
Ahead of National Handloom Day on August 7, Modi also urged countrymen to wear handloom products and promote local handlooms of their region with #MyProductMyPride.
“We will celebrate National Handloom Day on August 7. The way handloom products have made their place in the hearts of people is very encouraging,” Modi said, adding India has a rich handloom tradition.
“Artisans in different parts of the country are engaged in making handloom popular. Be it the Sambalpuri sari of Odisha, Maheswari sari of Madhya Pradesh, Paithani of Maharashtra, or the hand block prints of Vidarbha, the Bhutiko shawls and woollen clothes of Himachal or the Kani shawls of Jammu and Kashmir, the work of handloom artisans is spread to every corner of the country. Indian artisans weave not just fabrics, but stories of heritage and creativity and the sector generates employment for many, largely women,” he said.
Chief minister Mohan Majhi thanked Prime Minister Modi for praising the Sambalpuri sari. “This will help in promotion and popularisation of handloom products of Odisha and other states and support overall growth of artisans,” Majhi wrote on X.
Modi also praised AI-based startups for popularising India’s handloom products. He also asked people to start wearing Khadi products and promote them.
