Bhubaneswar: A video clip from Mecca in Saudi Arabia showing Haj pilgrims from Odisha taking shelter under a road overbridge has evoked strong resentment among the community. Many community leaders raised concern over the plight of pilgrims and demanded instant steps be taken to make arrangements for pilgrims.
They urged the state govt to look into the matter. The state Haj committee, which took the lead to send 528 pilgrims from Odisha this year, admitted it was a ‘temporary trouble’ for some pilgrims in the state during the pilgrimage. The Haj is scheduled to end on Sunday and Eid would follow on Monday. Executive officer of the state Haj committee, Purna Chandra Mishra, said he held discussions with officials of the Haj Committee of India and the Consulate General of India (CGI) to resolve this.
According to Mishra, Sahid Alam, an officer of CGI at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, said that the video clip could be from the first day when all pilgrims move to ‘Mina’, a site in the holy city of Mecca, during the pilgrimage. “It take some time for Saudi authorities to settle everybody down. Hopefully, this would have been sorted out as the pilgrims moved to Arafat and Muzdalifa on Saturday,” Mishra said, quoting Alam.
The clip, though, has invited sharp response from different quarters. Tanwir Ali, an activist, said the state Haj committee should be ashamed for putting pilgrims through such a state. Habibullah Khan, a senior BJD leader said the Haj committee should take strong action on this issue.
