Govt to set up 500-bed trauma care centre in SCB | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: State govt has decided to set up a 500-bed trauma care centre at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, to enable immediate advanced treatment for accident victims.
The decision was announced by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi late Monday night. The trauma centre will be implemented under the Centre’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY)’. The Centre will invest 60% of the funds for the project, while the state will contribute the remaining 40%.
The hospital’s trauma care facility now has 60 beds, due to which grievously injured patients have to wait for a bed. “Sometimes patients go to other hospitals finding no help. If the bed strength rises to 500, patients will get beds immediately,” said Akhand, an activist.
Chintamani Dehury, an attendant of a patient from Dhenkanal, said a huge number of patients from different districts come to the existing trauma and emergency facility at SCB daily. “We have to wait to get a bed. If the bed capacity increases, it will benefit patients immensely,” he added.
“The govt has approved the proposal. We have not received any guidelines regarding the trauma care centre with 500 beds. After it is set up, the bed strength of SCB will increase from 2,772 to 3,272,” said Lucy Das, superintendent in-charge, SCB.
She said the 500-bed trauma care centre will ease the burden on the existing facility. “After getting details from the govt, we can speak about the proposed centre,” she said, adding, “Construction work for the AIIMS+ facility is underway on a war-footing. It may be ready by the end of the year.”
After getting policy approval from the Centre, state govt has geared up for the project. “Following this approval, a detailed project report will be prepared, and steps will be taken for the project’s establishment,” read a statement from the chief minister’s office.
On July 2 last year, Majhi wrote a letter to Union health minister J P Nadda urging him to establish the trauma care centre at SCB.
