Govt to bring out water policy soon: CM | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The govt will soon come out with a comprehensive new state water policy, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Friday.
Replying to the demand grant for water resources department, the CM said the new policy aimed at transforming Odisha’s irrigation landscape and ensuring water security for future generations.
Majhi highlighted that despite 75 years of Independence, only 34% of Odisha’s agricultural land has irrigation facilities. The new policy aims to increase the coverage significantly, with a target to irrigate an additional seven lakh hectares of land in the immediate future. “Water is life, and our govt is committed to ensuring its efficient utilisation and management,” he said.
The govt has set an ambitious target to complete several major irrigation projects by 2029, including the Rengali Left Canal, Anandapur barrage, and Hadua dam. Additionally, new projects such as Khairibandhan, Brutang and Pipalpankha will be initiated within the next four years.
A budget of Rs 14,841.72 crore for water resources for 2025-26 represents a 12.22% increase from the current year’s expenditure.TNN
