Govt schools saw 80% of total admissions in past 3 years: Data | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Around 80% of total school enrolments in the state occurred in govt and govt-aided schools in the past three years, according to data presented in the assembly on Friday by school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond. He also highlighted the govt’s initiatives to generate interest in learning the Odia language among children.
In 2021-22, around 60.36 lakh students enrolled in 54,780 govt and govt-aided schools in the state, around 81% of the total school admissions. In contrast, 14.18 lakh students enrolled in 7,417 private schools in 2021-22, which was 19% of the total admissions.
In 2022-23, as many as 54,675 govt and govt-aided schools enrolled around 61.22 lakh students, accounting for 81% of the total admissions. Similarly, 7,216 private schools enrolled 14.10 lakh students, making up 19% of the total admissions.
In 2023-24, over 61.68 lakh students took admission in 54,565 govt and govt-aided schools, which was 80% of the total admissions. The number was 14.95 lakh (20%) for private schools that year.
While providing admission data for three years, the minister said, “Our department has not come across any data where it can be established that parents are showing interest in admitting their wards to English medium schools.”
The minister further said that they have taken necessary steps to generate interest among children to learn Odia in schools. “The school and mass education department has provided learning materials like language workbooks to promote Odia among students,” he added.
He said the department is providing training to teachers at regular intervals to teach languages to students efficiently. So far, 62,189 teachers have received training to effectively use teaching-learning aids under the foundation literacy and numeracy programme.
The govt has been making efforts to promote Odia ‘Asmita’ (pride) and the promotion of Odia language and has allocated funds for the purpose as well.
