Govt plans to offer BEd to students after Plus II
Bhubaneswar: Higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj on Thursday said students can choose BEd courses after completing their Plus II instead of the usual Plus III. This BEd programme will be offered under the integrated teacher education programme (ITEP), the minister said.
Eight teacher training institutes (BEd colleges) in the state signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with their nearest govt degree colleges on Thursday to implement the ITEP in the future. Following this, ITEP will be introduced in these institutions in accordance with the regulations of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) very soon, said an official source.
This initiative will enable teacher training institutes to adopt a multidisciplinary approach. “With the implementation of ITEP, students can complete their BEd degree in four years after Class XII. Previously, students completed a three-year undergraduate degree followed by a two-year BEd programme, requiring a total of five years,” said Suraj.
With ITEP, the minister said students can directly enrol in the integrated programme and complete the course in four years. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 and aims to strengthen the education system in the state. “We will also try to involve another eight teacher training institutions in the coming days,” the minister added.
Principals and students from various colleges participated in a virtual interaction session with the minister. “Our goal is to strengthen the foundation and infrastructure of the colleges and to provide quality education to the students,” Suraj said.
The minister said the higher education department allocated Rs 168 crore to enhance the infrastructure of 189 private degree colleges in the state. This financial support will be used for the construction of additional classrooms, laboratories, canteens, libraries, common rooms, multipurpose halls, and administrative and academic buildings, he added.
