Govt orders probe into deaths of two pregnant women | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha govt on Wednesday ordered separate inquiries into the deaths of two pregnant women at different healthcare facilities in Nayagarh and Kandhamal districts, following allegations of medical negligence. In the first incident, the govt has suspended a senior gynaecologist after 26-year-old Mamata Swain died at the Nayagarh district headquarters hospital on Saturday. Her husband, Sanjay Kumar Nayak, alleged that the doctor demanded a bribe for performing a C-section and subsequently neglected to provide necessary medical care when he refused to pay. A three-member expert team has been dispatched to investigate the circumstances leading to Swain’s death. The health and family welfare department has directed the team to submit its report within a week.In a separate incident in Kandhamal district, Sunima Pradhan died at the Daringbadi community health centre on Tuesday after allegedly receiving improper treatment. According to her husband Surendra Pradhan, Sunima, who was six months pregnant, was administered high-power injections for stomach pain without the doctor being informed of her pregnancy. The govt has constituted a team of senior specialists from Kandhamal Medical College and Hospital to probe the incident. “Any negligence in the treatment of pregnant women will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against staff found negligent,” a health department official said.
