Govt notifies new 6-member law panel

Bhubaneswar: State govt on Friday notified a new six-member law commission under the chairmanship of former Orissa high court judge Biswanath Rath to review the existing laws and recommend changes.
A notification issued by the law department said senior advocates Surya Prakash Mishra and Soura Chandra Mohapatra will be its members. Advocate general Pitambar Acharya and law secretary Manas Ranjan Barik are ex-officio members. An additional secretary in the law department will be its ex-officio member secretary.
Govt sources said the law commission will recommend withdrawal, substitution and modification of various laws to make these relevant and repeal legislations which are no longer relevant.
It will also examine laws which affect the poor and carry out post-audit for socio-economic impact of the legislations. The panel will also suggest ways to simplify and modernise laws for harmonising with globalisation and economic reforms. The previous BJD govt had appointed Justice Bijaya Kumar Nayak, a retired HC judge, as chairperson of Odisha State Law Commission in 2018.
