Govt notifies NEP implementation in state
Bhubaneswar: Govt has taken a significant step in educational reform by officially announcing implementation of National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, marking a major shift in the state’s education system.
Through a notification issued on Wednesday, the school and mass education department confirmed that the state would adopt the NEP- 2020 guidelines while incorporating regional elements to maintain local relevance. “After careful consideration, in the interest of strengthening the education system in the state, the govt is pleased to order that the NEP-2020 as issued by the ministry of education will be implemented in the state of Odisha,” the official notification stated.
The office of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi in an X post said, “In a landmark decision to strengthen Odisha’s education system, the state govt has approved the implementation of the NEP-2020.” The decision comes after extensive deliberation and represents a crucial milestone in aligning the state’s educational framework with national standards. The implementation will see the adoption of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) as the state curriculum framework, with necessary modifications to include local context and cultural elements specific to Odisha.
“This move is expected to bring about comprehensive changes in the state’s education system, from primary to higher education levels. The policy emphasises holistic development, skill-based learning, and increased focus on regional languages alongside modern education techniques,” said an official of the department. Academicians have welcomed this development, noting that the integration of local context within the national framework will help preserve cultural identity while meeting contemporary educational requirements.
The implementation process will be carried out in phases, with detailed guidelines expected to follow. The state education department is likely to form specialised committees to oversee the transition and ensure smooth implementation across all educational institutions, said the sources.
Though the Centre brought NEP in 2020, it could not be implemented in Odisha during the previous govt’s tenure. BJP promised in its election manifesto to implement it in the state after forming govt.
