Govt hikes accidental death benefits for construction workers to ₹6 lakh

Bhubaneswar: The Mohan Majhi govt on Wednesday increased accidental death benefits of building and other construction workers from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. Similarly, natural death benefit for these beneficiaries has been raised from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, chief minister said while addressing a convention of construction workers here.
Majhi urged the people to join the Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board and take advantage of various schemes of the govt.
“Govt is taking note of the hardships and difficulties faced by the labourers. The board has been established to help the workers in times of need, in hardship, after cessation of work, accident, and death. Our govt is with you and always will be,” said Majhi while addressing the construction workers.
He urged them to register their names with the board to get social security. “In times of need, this organisation will act not only as a govt agency, but also as your friend. Labour officers are also available in each district to assist you. A portal called ‘Mo Seva’ is also working for this,” Majhi said.
Labour minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia said construction workers have played an important role in developing the city, state, and country.
“Around 43 lakh construction workers have registered their names with the board. Efforts are being made by our department to eliminate the distress migration problem in the state. District-level officers will go to labourers and register their names with the board,” Singkhuntia said.
He said awareness will be created among building and other construction workers to ensure they register their names with the govt. “Govt is also thinking about providing houses to these workers,” the minister added.
