Govt allocates Rs 9.25cr for Jeypore lake’s facelift | Bhubaneswar News

Koraput: State govt has sanctioned Rs 9.25 crore to resume renovation of Jagannath Sagar lake in Jeypore, after work had stopped due to shortage of funds. The project aims to undertake holistic development of the lake, converting it into a major tourist attraction.
Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati said the state govt has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) worth Rs 45 crore for the lake’s renovation. “The tender process will commence soon, with dewatering and de-weeding operations expected to be completed before monsoon,” said Bahinipati. He added that at least 25 hectares of land, previously allocated to the fisheries department, will be merged with the lake to restore its original area.
Jagannath Sagar lake, originally spread over 115 hectares, was excavated in the late 17th century during the reign of Maharaja Vikram Deo-I to meet Jeypore’s water needs. However, illegal encroachments and alleged negligence have led to drastic reduction in its size to only 67.4 hectares.
Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, responding to an inquiry by Bahinipati in the assembly last month, said the state level high-powered steering committee (SHPSC) has recommended the inclusion of Jagannath Sagar’s restoration under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme.
The minister said the project is currently being implemented under the state govt’s Amo Pokhari scheme. “To expedite and ensure the completion of the renovation work of Jagannath Sagar, the Centre has been urged to include the project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The SHPSC has approved the proposal, which has been forwarded to the central govt for final approval,” Mahapatra said.
