Government to set up academic centre, tribal language lab in city | Bhubaneswar News



BHUBANESWAR: Govt will establish a new academic centre and language laboratory here for the city-based Academy of Tribal Languages and Culture (ATLC), a premier autonomous institution under the ST and SC development department.
The language laboratory will come up at Gothapatna on the city outskirts, near the proposed Adivasi Bhawan, where a multipurpose centre for meetings, conferences, shows and exhibitions of tribal art, culture and development has already been planned.
ST and SC development minister Nityananda Gond said the decision has been taken under the 100 Days’ Plan of his department.
The proposed language laboratory is a specifically designed area containing technological devices for tribal linguistic studies. It will enable learners, researchers, and students to record and replay their own voices for self-evaluation.
It will provide more practice opportunities, tailored education, exposure to real language, collaborative learning and audio to text conversion and vice versa. Serving as a digital linguistic hub, it will also help in preserving voices of tribal language specialists, digital education system, education and instruction materials and promotion of IT-based tools and technologies.
The academic centre is designed to be the first centre for tribal languages and dialects and their promotion and preservation. It will document the rich heritage of tribal linguistic kaleidoscopes of Odisha.
ATLC located at Adivasi Exhibition Ground, Unit – I, here is a one-stop destination to explore culture and traditions, folktales, riddles, biographies, cuisines, songs and other aspects of Odisha’s 64 tribes and 13 particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs). Tribal Atlas of Odisha is a major attraction of this academy.
Currently the academy has been processing manuscripts from 172 tribal writers from nine different tribal languages for their publications under various categories. This will definitely take the writers to the next level in order to make their writings see the light of the day.
ATLC organises the annual Adivasi Mela and it has become a popular event of cultural exchanges at the state capital. It also organizes state-level students’ festival ‘Sargiful’ and also sponsors tribal cultural troupes for various national, state, and district-level festivals.
