Government Hospital: Government to Verify Credentials of Doctors and Medical Staff in Response to Fake Doctor Arrest | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Following the arrest of a fake doctor from Rourkela Government Hospital on Thursday, state govt on Friday decided to verify the credentials of all doctors or paramedics engaged through outsourcing agencies in different govt hospitals.
Director of health services Bijay Kumar Mohapatra said they will issue instructions to officials concerned to verify documents of the doctors, technicians and paramedics engaged by the outsourcing agencies in dialysis units across the state.“The fake doctor issue prompted us to carry out this exercise,” he added.

Govt to check docus of docs, med staff

Govt is running Sahay scheme to provide free dialysis services at 54 district headquarters hospitals (DHHs) and community health centres (CHCs) in the state. Ten more hospitals will get this service very soon, said Mohapatra. Govt has roped in two outsourcing agencies to engage doctors, technicians and paramedics for the dialysis units functioning under the Sahay scheme. The imposter, Padmanavan Mukhi Karwa (53), a Jharkhand native, was working under the scheme.
Govt failed to verify the credentials of Karwa, who got hold of a fake certificate in the name of Ramesh Chandra Jha and worked as a doctor in the dialysis centre at RGH for seven months. A private loan disbursing firm caught the fake doctor red-handed while verifying Karwa’s documents.
Though the fraud had been arrested in 2019 by Sundargarh police and jailed for three months, nobody knew this truth during his appointment at RGH. “It is difficult for the outsourcing agency to appoint eligible candidates for the job. As govt does not appoint the staff, it did not bother about checking documents of the staff engaged by the agencies,” said a health department official.
Health activist Gouranga Mohapatra said govt should not allow outsourcing agencies to hold recruitment for technical and doctor posts. “If it allows the agency to appoint doctors, govt should verify the documents of the candidates thoroughly before engaging the person in hospitals. It is unfortunate that the fraud continued to treat patients for seven months. The RGH should inspect the health conditions of the kidney patients who took the help of the fraud for their dialysis,” he added.
After getting complaint from loan disbursing firm, Raghunathpalli police arrested Karwa on Thursday. Probe is underway, said police sources.
