Government forms panel to probe collapse of bridges in state | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: The state govt has formed a high-level committee to investigate the recent bridge collapses, including six incidents in the past 13 days.
The latest collapse took place at Khausi Dangi village in Kishanganj on Sunday, involving a small bridge built over Boond river in 2009-10 with MPLAD funds.
Most of the collapsed bridges, including those under construction, were either built or being constructed by the state’s rural works department (RWD).
On the recent collapse of a bridge over Bakra river in Araria district, the state’s rural works department minister Ashok Choudhary admitted initial signs of construction laxity in the bridge. “A committee has been formed to probe the causes behind the collapse of the bridge over Bakra river. The committee will submit its report within a week, after which appropriate measures will be taken,” Choudhary told reporters on the premises of state legislature.
Choudhary, who assumed the WRD ministerial position three months ago, emphasized that accountability should fall on former deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who held the portfolios of road construction department and WRD for 17 months.
Later, the minister told PTI, “The department has constituted a high-level committee headed by chief engineer to probe recent incidents of bridge collapse that have been reported from different parts of the state. The committee will find out the reasons and also suggest remedial measures.”
The committee, tasked specifically with incidents related to RWD-built bridges, is expected to submit its findings within two to three days.
Choudhary mentioned initial reports suggesting some bridges were non-operational or required maintenance.
The committee has been instructed to thoroughly examine all aspects, including the quality of materials used in bridge foundations and structures.
“While one bridge under construction collapsed, most others were aged structures already marked for reconstruction,” Choudhary said.
Among the collapsed bridges, two were under construction, one awaited inauguration, and three were old structures.
