Bhubaneswar: Tax authorities on Monday seized 50 kg of gold and 200 kg of silver packed in cash vans near Biju Patnaik International Airport. While the gold seized is valued at more than Rs 38 crore, the silver would be worth Rs 1.86 crore in the market.
Sleuths of the commercial tax and goods and services tax (CT-GST) intercepted two vehicles — one with gold and the other with silver stashed in them.Authorities are trying to find out whether the consignment reached the city by flight or some other mode of transport.
Manas Swain additional commissioner, GST (Bhubaneswar circle), said they were tipped off by local intelligence about the huge consignment. “We have not seized the vehicles. We have only detained the drivers to check their credentials — like if they have proper documentation and bills to prove the legality of the consignment. Investigation is currently on,” Swain said.
Whether the gold belonged to any individual or a firm is under verification.
