GCC Installs Steel Fencing to Prevent Abandoned Cars on Beach | Chennai News – The Times of India

Status: cleared
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) removed at least 16 abandoned cars dumped on Marina Loop Road beach near Srinivasapuram, close to the Adyar Estuary on Friday. The civic body has also identified five encroaching mechanic sheds operating illegally on the beach.
Officials said they will issue notices to encroachers shortly but have fenced the area to block access and prevent further misuse. GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran said the stretch will be monitored, and violators will be booked. “We have told the mechanics not to use the spot again. Their sheds will be removed too,” he said.
Earlier, TOI reported that nearly 20 cars—some rusted and abandoned for months—were left on the beach by auto repair shops. Mechanics operated late into the night. Residents complained that the poorly lit, narrow stretch has become an encroachment hub.
Kumaragurubaran said that while routine encroachment checks had paused since mid-2024, action was taken after identifying the illegal activity. The first batch of 250 of the 1,250 abandoned cars secured by the GCC from across the city will soon be auctioned online, he said.
Meanwhile, officials said the civic body will provide better lighting on Marina Loop Road and build approach roads to the area as part of the Besant Nagar Broken Bridge reconstruction. A proposed flyover will connect Srinivasapuram and Besant Nagar across the Adyar Estuary.
