Ganjam: Winning State Polls Trend in Ganjam District | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Strange as it may sound, the fate of political parties in this can be predicted following the trend of undivided Ganjam district (now Ganjam and Gajapati districts).
The politically sensitive district with the highest number of 13 assembly constituencies in Ganjam and two seats in Gajapati, is known for its loyalty swing in the assembly elections. The result of the past elections indicated the party that came to power in the state got the lion’s share of the seats in the districts, political observers said.
This trend was observed in the last 9 out of 10 elections for the state assembly since 1977, they said.
When the Janata Party candidates won in 8 out of 15 seats in undivided Ganjam district (now divided in two districts) in 1977, the party had formed the govt in the state. The district did a U-turn in the next election held in 1980, when the Congress candidates won in 10 out of 15 seats and the Congress formed the govt.
The trend also continued in 1985 elections, when the Congress had won 12 seats and paved the way for the formation of the Congress govt.
In 1990, Ganjam again did a U-turn when the Janata Dal and its ally CPI emerged triumphant in all the seats, except for Congress and helped to form the govt headed by Biju Patnaik. While Janata Dal candidates had won in 11 seats, while its ally CPI had won in three seats and Congress one.
The undivided district, however, had deviated from the trend in the 1995 election, when the Congress had formed the govt headed by JB Patnaik for a third term. In this election, seven Janata Dal and five Congress candidates were elected to the assembly. The BJP and Independent candidates were elected in one and two seats respectively.
After the 2000 election when chief minister Naveen Patnaik contested in the state assembly from Hinjili seat, Ganjam district (except Gajapati), which alone has 13 seats, shifted its loyalty to BJD.
In 2000, the BJD-BJD alliance won in 10 seats, while Congress and CPI won in two and one seats respectively. In 2004, BJD had won nine seats in the districts, while one seat each went to the candidates of BJP, Congress, CPI and Independent.
In 2009, the BJD won 12 seats while sweeping all 13 seats in 2014 in the district. In 2019, the BJD had won in 12 seats, while Sanakhemundi went in favour of the Congress candidate.
