Ganja Smugglers: Two Ganja Smugglers Sentenced to 10 Years of Rigorous Imprisonment | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: A court in Berhampur on Monday sentenced two ganja smugglers from Gajapati district to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for illegally transporting ganja last year.
The convicts, Kailash Gouda (28) of Ruamba and Muna Sethsingh (24) of Dhenka Sindhaba, both under Mohana police station limits in Gajapati district, were fined Rs 1 lakh each by judge Indu Sharma.Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of rigorous imprisonment. The duo was caught by personnel from the intelligence and enforcement bureau wing of the excise department in Berhampur on June 8, 2023, while they were illegally transporting around 300 kg of ganja in a van at Balipada under Berhampur Sadar police station.
The ganja was being transported from Gajapati to Bhubaneswar when the excise personnel on patrol, raided the vehicle and discovered the contraband packets. They were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Patra said that the excise personnel presented a strong case against the accused, resulting in their conviction.
