Ganja smuggler dies after jumping from bridge

Bhubaneswar: A ganja smuggler succumbed to injuries during treatment on Tuesday after jumping from Suktel river bridge in Sonepur district while being chased by special task force (STF) personnel the day before.
DIG (STF) Pinak Mishra said their personnel intercepted an SUV in Tarava area of Sonepur on Monday evening following an intelligence input. “Upon spotting the police, the driver and another person attempted to flee. While one suspect was arrested by our personnel, the driver leapt from the bridge. He sustained multiple fractures after landing on the dry riverbed during summer. He was taken to a hospital in Sambalpur district where he later died from his injuries,” Mishra said.
The STF recovered about 3 quintals of ganja from the SUV. The arrested individual, whose identity remains under verification, is being questioned. The vehicle was found carrying two registration plates — one from Odisha and another from Chhattisgarh.
“We have intensified the investigation into the inter-state drug trafficking network following this incident. We suspect they were transporting the contraband from Kandhamal district to Chhattisgarh. We are investigating the dual registration plates found on the vehicle, which suggests a well-planned operation to avoid detection,” added DIG Mishra.
