Ganga River Floods Bhagalpur Town, Snakes Enter Homes | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Water of the swollen Ganga river on Sunday nearly submerged the steps of the Ganga river front between Kali Ghat and Gandhi Ghat in the state capital, besides entering parts of the Bhagalpur town, where a large number of snakes have made way to the town, causing fear of snakebite among its residents.
At Digha in Patna, the river Ganga, that was flowing above 11cm above danger level (50.45metre) on Sunday afternoon, will witness increase in water level by 10cm by Monday morning, the Central Water Commission (CWC) forecast said.
Similarly, the river was flowing 80cm above the danger level (48.60metre) at Gandhi Ghat, and it would see an increase by 7cm on Monday morning.
As per the CWC, there is a rising trend in the water level of the river Ganga at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district in the east and at Hathidah in Patna district in the west.
Although the Ganga was flowing 28cm below the danger level of 33.68metre near Bhagalpur, its water level is showing rising trend, and it would increase by 30cm by Monday morning.
Owing to the rising water level of the Ganga over the past five days, water has entered houses in the lower areas along the bank, including the lower areas around Girls’ PG Hostel of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in the Lalbag locality.
For the first time, people are seeing a strange phenomenon of snakes entering the Bhagalpur town to escape the floodwaters of the river. A forest department team has been attending to the local alarm calls and rescuing snakes.
“In the last five days, our team has rescued 160 snakes and abandoned them in the forests of Jamui district. From around the rooftop water tank of Girls’ P G Hostel of TMBU, we rescued 40 newborn vipers,” the forest department’s team leader, Abhay Kumar Sinha told local mediapersons. A 12-year-old boy died due to snakebite in the district, as he was not admitted to a hospital.
Meanwhile, water levels of the rivers Kosi, Gandak and Sone have also been rising steadily. The flow of water through Birpur barrage on Kosi was 1.87 lakh cusecs, through Valmikinagar barrage on Gandak 1.15 lakh cusecs, and through Indrapuri barrage across the river Sone 99,965 cusecs on Sunday.
