MUMBAI: The first general category merit list for college admissions to class 11 in Mumbai division has been released, and while cut-offs across streams have seen only a marginal rise or drop, the competition among students seeking commerce colleges seems to be higher, with top institutions closing their cut-offs at above 90%.
Of the 1,30,650 students allotted seats across streams in Round 1, 43% of students got their most preferred colleges. The maximum number of seats, 1.26 lakh, are for commerce, and 54% of students were allotted commerce seats in the first round.
Ruparel College, which closed at 88.8% in 2022 and 89.4% last year, has now entered the 90s club with its commerce cut-off at 90.6%. KC College had students with 97.40% making it on the commerce merit list, compared to last year’s top score of 95.60%. Mulund College of Commerce also bettered its own cut-offs with 92%, compared to 90.8% in 2022 and 91% last year.
According to Prof. Preeta Nilesh, principal of Vaze College, students are opting for Commerce because they wish to pursue CA, CS, and Law alongside their commerce education and prepare for the entrance exams. Vaze College’s commerce cut-off was 92.4%.
Science cut-offs have also seen an increase in top colleges. St Xavier’s College’s science cut-off at 91.6% was higher by 0.8% compared to last year. Vice Principal Prof Savio D’souza said the demand for science continues to pick up, and quota admissions also showed an upward trend for science. He cited the example of one of his top scorers at HSC this year, Prisha Thacker, who secured 97% without taking outside coaching. Science colleges, especially those strict with attendance, have been struggling to get good students who opt for integrated courses in coaching classes. Prof D’souza explained that science students can switch to commerce and arts after 12th, while the reverse is not allowed.
Cut-offs fell by one to 3% in top arts/humanities colleges. Jaihind College’s cut-off dropped 1.6% to close at 89.6%, while Andrews College’s 78.4% cut-off for Arts was a dip of 3.2% over last year.
