Four officials get year in jail in mill fraud case | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: A special sessions court judge convicted five accused, including Sunil Dattatray Satam, then admin in-charge (officer on special duty), National Textile Corporation (western region), in a fraud case, said a CBI press release.
The CBI, in the note issued on Friday, said the four others convicted were Sadanand Jagannath Vardam, then assistant manager, Finlay Mill; Arun Atmaram Belnekar, then accounts officer, Finlay Mills; Anant Dhondu Mahadik, then account officer; and Ananda Yashwant Sable, a private transporter.
The sentence for the four public servants is one year of imprisonment while for the private citizen it is two years, said the note. The total fine imposed was Rs 25 lakh each for all five.
The CBI registered the case in Jan 2014, alleging that the accused conspired together with intention to cheat the NTC by abusing their official powers and, without allegedly calling a tender for transportation, allotted work to a transporter. In the process, the mill sustained a loss of Rs 37 lakh and corresponding wrongful gain to the accused, argued the CBI.
The CBI filed its chargesheet on Dec 30, 2014, and the court framed charges on Nov 13, 2017. The prosecution examined 21 witnesses to prove its case.
